All classes participate in a weekly scheduled lesson conducted by the Physical Education teacher. The Physical Education teacher teaches explicit skills, including training for annual sporting events e.g. Athletics and Cross Country.

sportsday11Annual Athletics Day

Our school athletics day is held each year in second semester at the Appin Street Athletics Complex. The children participate in a variety of age appropriate athletic events and games in three different teams for the day. New families are assigned a team to help balance the numbers across the school - those who have siblings at St. Bernard's are placed into their family's team. Children may wear a coloured Tee shirt in their team's colour (red, blue or gold) on the day. Families are welcome to come along and cheer for their child and their team and connect with our community. Students from Galen Catholic College assist in the running of the events. Their assistance is greatly appreciated. Students in Grade 3 - 6 who perform well in their events may be selected to attend the Zone Athletics Carnival at a later date.

 Cross Country Event

The annual Cross Country event attracts an enormous crowd of families, who support their children through the run and then stay for a family picnic on the oval. The Students in the Foundation to 2 classes, run with their grade level. The students in the Grades 3 - 6 classes run in their age groups. The students in Grades 3 - 6 have varied distances to run, according to their age group. The run takes place on the bike track at the back of our school. Our students eagerly train for this event for many weeks, before the Cross Country.

Bluearth Program

Our classroom teachers also take Physical Education and Health sessions with their students. Our staff are trained in the Bluearth Program, which gives students the confidence, motivation and competence to lead an active life. Bluearth provides opportunities for students to experience success and enjoyment, as well as learning through experience and self reflection to see the importance of an active life in their future.

Bluearth not only addresses the physical health of children, but also improves self awareness, focus, self esteem and resilience.

We have been working with the Bluearth Foundation for over 10 years to develop our student’s social and emotional wellbeing through physical activity. We are now exploring Positive Psychology strategies through Bluearth’s ‘Mindfulness Program’ to provide our Grade Three and Four students and staff with strategies that work on managing stress and improving wellbeing. We thank Matt Dillon, our Bluearth Coach, for his support in our school.

Swimming Program

All classes take part in the Wangaratta Aquatic Centre's swimming program in Term Four. The students are grouped according to their level of confidence in the water, and experience swimming and water safety sessions with the Aquatic Centre's experienced and qualified staff. Parental support is appreciated at these sessions for supervision.

Inter School Sports

The senior students enjoy the competitive spirit of inter School sports with other primary schools in Wangaratta. Sports include football , soccer and netball. Our students play these events on our netball courts and sports oval, and travel to other schools to compete. Parents and friends are welcome to come along and cheer for our teams.
